Psychology, Marketing & Leadership

A residential summer school at the University of Bath, for students aged 14 to 18. Explore how people think, decide, trust, follow and respond to ideas. Across the course, students connect psychology, leadership and marketing through practical workshops, debates, simulations and creative challenges. They learn how behaviour works, how to communicate with impact and how to lead people with greater self-awareness.

About our Psychology, Marketing & Leadership Course

This course helps students understand people.

Students explore why people make decisions, what makes them trust others, how leaders create belief and how communication changes the way ideas are received.

Rather than treating psychology, marketing and leadership as separate subjects, the programme connects them through one practical question: how do you understand people well enough to influence them responsibly?

Workshops are highly interactive. Students debate, interview, decode adverts, run simulations, test ideas, use AI creatively and build short pitches. They also reflect on their own behaviour, values and leadership style throughout the programme.

Across the course, students build a personal Consultant’s Toolkit, adding one practical tool from each workshop. By the final session, they use these tools to diagnose a communication challenge, propose a leadership response and create a campaign that follows from their insight.

What You'll Study: Course Curriculum

Psychology & Human Behaviour

Neuromarketing

Students explore how much of human decision-making happens below conscious awareness. They examine attention, emotion and persuasion before designing an advert using neuromarketing principles.

Thinking Fast and Slow

Students investigate the fast and slow systems behind human thinking. They learn when people respond emotionally, when they think carefully and how communication can speak to both.

Evolutionary Psychology

Students explore how ancient human needs still shape modern behaviour. They examine safety, belonging and status, then apply these ideas to modern habits, brands and decision-making.

Consciousness and AI

Students consider one of the biggest questions in psychology and technology: what would prove that a mind feels something? They debate consciousness, behaviour, experience and the limits of AI.

The Science of Motivation

Students learn that motivation is not just willpower. They explore motivation as a cost and energy calculation, then build a model of their own motivation system.

Leadership, Communication & Self-Awareness

Leadership Compass

Students explore the difference between leading and managing. They identify their personal values, assess their leadership strengths and consider different leadership styles.

Leadership Toolkit

Students learn how to hold attention, speak with clarity and communicate what they stand for. They write and practise a short leadership philosophy grounded in their own values.

Cynefin: Problem Solving & Decision-Making

Students learn that different problems need different methods. They practise diagnosing whether a problem is simple, complicated, complex or urgent before choosing how to respond.

Negotiation

Students explore the three dimensions of negotiation: the problem, the people and the process. They practise reaching agreement by understanding what the other side really needs.

Influence, Marketing & Creative Communication

Mindset in Marketing

Students explore fixed and growth mindsets, then examine how communication can sell identity or transformation. They consider when marketing supports people and when it becomes manipulative.

How Brands Get Inside Your Head

Students decode how design, language, price and experience influence perceived value. They learn how brands increase reward, reduce friction and make people feel something.

Got Life?

Students learn how campaigns can make people care about something they usually ignore. They design an attention-grabbing campaign that communicates through absence rather than instruction.

Marketing with AI

Students explore how AI can support creative work, while learning where human judgement still matters. They build a brand identity under time pressure and test how prompt quality shapes output.

Design Thinking Sprint

Students start with a real person, not an idea. They interview, identify a deeper problem, prototype a solution and pitch something designed around a genuine user need.

The Final Challenge

Students bring the full course together by diagnosing a real communication problem, proposing a leadership response and creating a campaign that follows from their insight.

Innovation Showcase: Behaviour & Influence Challenge

The Behaviour & Influence Challenge is the final showcase of the Psychology, Marketing & Leadership course.

Working in teams, students choose a real-world communication challenge and build a three-part response:

  • A one-sentence diagnosis of what is really happening
  • A leadership or communication response to address the people issue
  • A campaign idea that follows directly from their insight

Students must also create something visible, such as a slogan, mock advert, storyboard, landing page, product concept or campaign visual.

The focus is not only on creativity. Students must explain the psychology behind their idea, show how their recommendation connects to the problem and present clearly to the room.

The Future: University and Careers

The programme is designed to help students explore future university and career options linked to psychology, communication, leadership and human behaviour.

Students consider how understanding people connects with future study and careers across psychology, marketing, design, leadership and communication-focused fields.

Careers linked to this course include:

Psychology
Behavioural Science
Consumer Psychology
Marketing Communications
Leadership & Team Development
UX Research
Creative Strategy
Organisational Psychology
